The Underground Railroad
The Underground Railroad is not as it
seems. It was not a railroad nor underground, but it was a series of houses and other buildings used to hide slaves on their way North. It was also operated by more than one person, but all of them were working to help bring slaves north. You see during this time
around the late 1600s and through the 1800s North blacks were free, but South blacks were not.
The Underground Railroad grew around 1831 about when the steamboat was invented. This is when The Underground Railroad stated getting called The Underground Railroad because it actually used terms that the railroad systems used like conductors,passengers, stations, station masters, stock holders, and also railroad. These things must
have helped because some people may have been trying to find an actuall underground railroad instead of actually knowing that it was not underground or a railroad.
Running away to the North is not as easy as it seams. The slaves had to go through so much to just get their freedom. The conductors would sometimes have to pose as slaves to get
in to the farm to lead them to their freedoms in the North. They had to sleep during the day and move at night, and had to walk mostly every where,most of them did not have shoes and if they did they were not very good ones. They were probly scared and worried that
they maybee caught almost every moment. It had to of been hard to
go trough, but it was todally worth it.
While Traveling, conductors moved
between ten and fifteen miles to the next
station, but only moving at night to avoid
getting caught.While they waited at the
station, a message would be sent to the next one to alert the station master of the coming slaves. This must have been very usefull for the station master to know exactly when they would be there so that they could be prepared.
Harriet Tubman, better known as Moses, was a famous conductor of the Underground Railroad.Harriet was once a slave, and when she was younger tryed to stand up to a white man to help another slave. The white man got
mad and threw a weight at Hariet and after that she suffered from fainting spells, and laterran away. She later made nineteen trips to the South to help slaves to the north and only durring a ten year period. Harriet having the nickname Moses was never caught because the
white men were always looking for a man not a women. Harriet once told Fredrick Douglas that she never lost a single passenger. I do believe that Harriet went through more than most conductors.
I think the Underground Railroad was
the greatest thing going on throught the 1600s and the 1800s.I believe it braught hope to a lot of slaves back then that wanted to be free, and most of them got that chance. Thanks to the Underground Railroad the South lost about one hundered-thousand slaves. I believe it was not only a hard time for the slaves, but also the slave owners.The slaves for what they had to go through to be free and the slave owners because they didn't have anyone to work their crops so they went to waste, and they did not get any money from them.
